Working Together to Ensure Safety and Health in the Construction Sector of Addis Ababa

Ethiopian Labour Rights Watch (ELRW) in collaboration with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, organised a consultative meeting on Occupational Safety and Health in the Construction Sector in Addis Ababa on October 4 2021 at Inter Luxury Hotel Addis Ababa to strengthen the cooperation among trade unions, employer associations and government policy makers for the purpose of expanding a concrete solution to ensure safety and health in the construction industry.

The construction sector is one of the most hazardous industries. The majority of the labour force in construction zones is exposed to unsafe working environment and without basic Personal Protective Equipment which is also the case in Addis Ababa where the booming construction sector employs tens of thousands of workers.

The meeting created a platform for relevant stakeholders to review the policy, legal and institutional framework gaps and analyse enforcement limitations regarding occupational safety and health in the construction sector in Addis Ababa. Highly informative research papers were presented by specialists on the issue and the meeting discussed the steps that should be taken to further ensure the health and livelihood of workers, and the policies that should be implemented in the construction sector in Addis Ababa.
